Digital Narrative Warfare

Digital Civics, Discourse Analysis, Public Policy · April 22, 2020

The power of digitally-mediated narratives has created new possibilities for the art of war.  States in international competition have seized upon digitally-mediated narratives to influence or even defeat rival states. Currently Russia claims that at the US disseminated narratives that tipped Ukraine, Syria, and Libya into civil war, while the US claims that Russia’s RT news platform disseminated narratives to influence the 2016 US elections.  Today, countries around the world are racing to understand digital narrative warfare.

This research project seeks to understand this emergent phenomenon.  The research consists in developing a conceptual framework for informational governance and informational subversion and in analyzing subversive news narratives distributed across borders.  For more information on this project see http://sites.gatech.edu/ip3/
